Occasionally as a music fan you experience a quantum shift, a moment where you hear something new and fall in love so instantly it puts the rest of music in new perspective. You only get a few of these moments, and they tend to happen early on in your life: those exciting moments where you discover a new album or style that completely changes what you thought you knew and liked. As time goes on, you experience them less and less, but you always crave that early excitement that made you fall in love with music in the first place. Timewave’s debut album “Solar System”, released on prolific progressive trance and house label Mistiquemusic, is one of those moments.

This is an album so much better than the competition that it will make trance DJs stare at their crate and wonder what the fuck they’ve bothered spending their money on until now. It’s trance in the purest, most original sense of the term. Forget all those ideas of snare-rolls, big crescendos and Jesus-posing super-DJs. We’re talking ultra-long, ultra-hypnotic, futurist music that will space you out until you’re in cryosleep. And this time, you can dance to it. This album has bass to go with the space, and in spades, a low end you can get lost in just as much as the swirling synth nebulas orbiting above.

Trance fans like to talk about being taken on a journey. This album will take you out there and back again. It’s 90 minutes long and ebbs, flows, builds and drops perfectly every second of the way. It begins with deep ambience, passes through spaced out breaks into rumbling 4/4 beats, dropping back into breaks at various points to keep things fresh before returning to the dancefloor. It’s that rarest of things: an album where not only does every track work together, but every track would be a killer highlight on any other album. Progressive house and trance DJs have been hammering the material from this album in the last couple of weeks, but everyone has been playing different tracks. Everything here is good enough to be a single.

Okay, I’m being hyperbolic, but you have to go a long way back to find an album that competes with this one. The last decade has been pretty lean on great trance records: the last classic progressive trance LP was “EarthShine” by Solar Fields back in 2008. There’s been talk of a resurgence of the deep, progressive sound in recent years. Labels like Mistiquemusic have lead the way, and this record is surely a call to arms for the genre.

Some might say there’s nothing massively new going on here, and that’s true – even the vibe is the same starbound futurism electronic music has been exploring since the 1970s pioneers, but it’s very rare to hear it pulled off in such a stunning manner. If you’ve always written trance music off as banal, give this a listen. If you’ve always liked the idea of deep trance but never found enough to your liking, give this a listen. If you miss the days when DJs like Sasha & Digweed, Parks & Wilson, Dave Seaman and Nick Warren used to play the best music around, give this a listen. Hell, if you like electronic music in any measure, just give this a listen. You might not like it, but it deserves a chance.
