The Southampton based DJ & Producer is one of UK techno’s leading lights. He released his debut album on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode, the first long player to be released on the legendary label for five years. He runs his own 8 Sided Dice imprint and has also released music for John Digweed’s Bedrock Records, including a former Pete Tong Essential New Tune ‘Reflections’.

Anjunadeep continues to broaden its horizons with this new four-track EP from Dutch producer Stephen J Kroos.

Those familiar with British label Anjunabeats will probably associate it with cheesy overblown trance schmaltz, but it’s sub-label Anjunadeep where the real action is. Operated by James Grant, Anjunadeep has been picking up favour with all kinds of respected DJs thanks to its more eclectic and restrained sound. Stephen J Kroos’ last release saw turntable time from names as prestigious as Laurent Garnier and Dave Clarke, and on his new EP you can hear why.

Kroos has always been a stylistic wild card for the Anjuna stable. Here he veers away from the trancey electro house collisions Anjunadeep specialise in for a tougher, Detroit-influenced tech sound. Title track “Reperfusion” is the pick of the bunch, a smouldering techno cut replete with vibrant synth stabs and vocal samples that will make you long with a steamy underground dancefloor. “Angiogenesis” brings in dramatic string flourishes and a chord progression to die for, channelling classic early-90s tech house. The other tracks – “Inflammation” and “Ubiquitination” – are more predictable cuts, but they’ll still do damage with a wide variety of DJs, from deep house to progressive jocks. We rate this EP a healthy 7/10 and would very much like to hear it on a dancefloor soon, thanks.

” Clap Back is a real gem. The original mix has a beautiful spacious and airy mix that allows the echo-soaked toms and the swirling vox stabs to breathe, and they really draw you in. An insistent bass pulse provides a structure for the snappy post-garage percussion to build into a lurching, lunging rhythm.

Very original, and very infectious. Ekkohaus’ remix is a focused, driving deep house groove, shaped around lush, rounded stabs and heavily-filtered synths. Claps and snare emerge from the beautifully balanced mix to give the track a real disco kick.

The third track on the EP Zero Gravity has a more back-to-basics feel. The bassline is dubby, but the percussion has a classic French Touch feel that gives the track real movement. A Rhodes-like synth line wraps itself round the track like a warm fuzzy blanket. Maximum comfort for house heads.”

Long-serving Scottish label Soma have announced details of Soma Compilation 2011, scheduled for release this December.

Beginning life back in 1991, the label founded by Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle (better known by their production name Slam) have been responsible for releasing such classics as Daft Punk’s “Da Funk,” Funk D’Void’s “Diabla” and their own “Positive Education.” 2010 has been another fairly substantial year for them: in addition to putting out music from Joris Voorn, Gary Beck and Silicone Soul, Soma proffered The Black Dog’s Music For Real Airports — an LP that will likely prove to be among the most highly regarded in electronic music this year.

Contrary to its title, Soma Compilation 2011 rounds up this year in the life of the label. Music from perennial Soma producers Silicone Soul, The Black Dog and Funk D’Void rubs up against tracks from newer names like Harvey McKay and Gary Beck. Joris Voorn’s remix of Samuel L. Session’s 2006 club smash “Can You Relate” makes an appearance, while The Black Dog remix Slam’s “Azure” which did similar damage of dancefloors in 2007.
